Van den Velde Script by Iza and Paulo W is a free calligraphic script with grand formal flourishes and sharply changing stroke widths. Its capitals sweep into long loops and crossing strokes for an elaborate, engraved look.
Its formal calligraphic tradition suits wedding invitations, luxury packaging, and period publishing. The strongest role is an ornate title. On event stationery, the sweeping strokes can become part of the border ornament rather than serving as neutral text.

Van den Velde Script is a free interpretation by Iza and Paulo W of the work of the Dutch master penman Jan van den Velde, published in Spieghel der schrijfkonste, in den welcken ghesien worden veelderhande gheschrifften met hare fondementen ende onderrichtinghe (Haarlen, 1605). Van den Velde is credited with introducing and perfecting a new trend in Dutch calligraphy. The font is designed to improve legibility while retaining features of the source work’s archaic forms.
- Dozens of stylistic alternates are provided for each uppercase and lowercase letter and can be accessed through the glyph palette.
- Historical ornaments and fleurons based on 17th-century Low Countries styles and motifs can be accessed through the glyph palette using the Ornaments feature.
- The font includes hundreds of contextual alternates and discretionary ligatures.
- More than 700 glyphs were manually adjusted in kerning pairs.
The font works in applications that do not support OpenType features. Its OpenType features can be accessed in InDesign, Illustrator, QuarkXPress, and similar software.
The Van den Velde User Guide is a PDF brochure in the Gallery section.
